Disclosure Policy

The Federal Trade Commission policies for online advertising and affiliate disclosures. Please do read the full article on this disclosure policy directly through FTC, however here is an overall summary of the items that are important to you as an affiliate:

  • You must disclose if you received a product for free to review.
  • You must disclose if you received compensation in exchange for a review or testimonial.
  • You must disclose if you are using an affiliate link in conjunction with a review or recommendation.

Anytime you are promoting an affiliate link, you must ensure you have provided a disclosure claim. As it is important to your readers, viewers, and followers to know what they are agreeing to by following your recommendations. If not, you could be fined should you be reported. Below are some simple and creative ideas for providing a disclosure for your channel to comply with the law;

Bloggers

There are two ways to provide a disclosure for your blog.

1.  Create a Disclosure Policy, in your footer this way it is present on all pages throughout your website. Be sure to include your personal advertising information, affiliate links, sample reviews etc.

2. Use a disclaimer at the end of your blog articles. You may use the one below as an example;

Disclaimer: The above _________ (enter company(s) name) link is an affiliate link. The _______ (enter relevant products) were sent to me for review. This video is (or is not), sponsored by any of the companies mentioned.

YouTube

If you have a YouTube channel, you need to ensure you disclose this information in your video description box. This informs your subscribers that this particular video contains affiliates links, or that it is a sponsored video or that you received products to review for free to promote through your channel. Here is an example disclosure that you may use;

Disclaimer: The above _________ (enter company(s) name) link is an affiliate link. The _______ (enter relevant products) were sent to me for review. This video is (or is not), sponsored by any of the companies mentioned.
